Very sad news in the end of the season: Sergei Samoilov, who achieved two new routes with Denis Urubko on Broad Peak and Manaslu, died on Lhotse, reports the homepage of the expedition.
Sergei was born on January 4th, 1958. The Kazakh climber started 8000ers climbing in 2005, when he and Denis climbed a new route on Broad Peak. In 2006 he first climbed Manaslu by the normal route, again with Denis, and just thirteen days later the two also climbed a new route on this mountain. Then in spring 2007 he climbed Dhaulagiri I and later that year he achieved the first autumn ascent of K2, again with Denis Urubko. Now, he attempted the first Lhotse-Everest traverse with Vassili Pivtsov and Maksut Zhumayev and during the last attempt to the Lhotse summit, he perished on the mountain.
Again, this is a great loss for the climbing community. Condolences go to his family and friends!
