Born on this day

1948 Vladimir (Volodya) Balyberdin, Russian climber, who ascended Everest twice (1982 and 1991), Kangchenjunga in 1989 by traverse from South-Peak across the Central- and Main-Peaks to Yalung Kang (sixteen days earlier he already ascended the Central-Peak) and K2 in 1992. He died in a car accident in 1994, aged 45.

1979 Bhagirathi Parvat I North-Peak (6556 m) by a Czechoslovak party.


Gone on this day

2008 Yoshinobu Kato, Japanese climber, who ascended Manaslu RP twice (1997 and 2006), Gasherbrum II and Gasherbrum I in 2001, Lhotse in 2002, Annapurna I in 2003, Everest twice (2005 and 2008) and Cho Oyu and Shisha Pangma in 2006, died in an avalanche on Kula Kangri (7538 m), aged 32.

Joe Puryear Lost in Tibet!

It's been reported, that Joseph (Joe) Puryear, the great American climber (born on August 17th, 1973), who's passion was to search for first ascent possibilities, died on Lapche Kang I (aka Labuche Kang or Labgye Kung, 7367 m) in Tibet!

Avalanche on Baruntse: Chuwang Nima missed!

Chuwang Nima, one of the leading Sherpa climbers is missing after an avalanche on Baruntse on Saturday!

Chuwang Nima (born August, 20th 1967, sometimes aka Chhewang Nima), who ascended Everest 18 (!) times (one ascent was unrecognized!), also summited Cho Oyu in 2002 and Shisha Pangma Central-Peak in 2004.

The name of the second Sherpa climber, who went missing in the avalanche is not known so far.

Eric Larsen finished the "Three Poles"

When Eric Larsen summited Everest on October 15th together with four Sherpa climbers, he also finished the so-called "Three Poles". The table is updated, but there are the first finishing dates for North and South Pole, not the repetitions from this year.

Alix Von Melle Summits Cho Oyu

On October 2nd lady climber Alix von Melle from Germany and Austrian Rupert Hauer summited Cho Oyu!

It was Alix's fourth 8000er after Gasherbrum II in 2006, Nanga Parbat in 2008 and Dhaulagiri I in 2009.
